The newly named Rock the House 8K continued to grow as runners started at the Celebrate Fairfax Festival. Last year the race was a typical pre-summer day in June with more than modest humidity that would climb to about eighty degrees. This year the course would be littered with liters of perspiration as the region launched into a record heat wave.

"It's nice, high air," Rudolph said. "Clean air. ... I don't' like big races, I didn't run the Bolder Boulder this year because of all the people and noise.

Kibet pulled away in the last mile of the 6.2-mile race to claim the $10,000 first-place prize with a winning time of 32:43.
